Mediapro to acquire Fox Sports pay-TV channels in Argentina which is currently owned by the Walt Disney Company

Mediapro is set to acquire the Fox Sports pay-TV channels in Argentina which is currently owned by the Walt Disney Company. Disney had agreed to sell its various Fox Sports channels across the globe in order to complete a US$71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets. Fox Sports Mexico being sold to Grupo Lauman is another notable example.

Mediapro acquisition of Fox Sports

MediaPro and Disney had agreed on this deal in February however the authorities in Argentina approved the move in the month of April.

The resolution signed between the parties in April does not definitively authorize the sale. For the sale to materialize, Disney and Fox will have to meet a series of requirements proposed by the CNDC (Comisión Nacional de Defensa de la Competencia) the country’s competition regulators. The requirements would address competition issues that would emerge with the onset of this deal.

The conditions outlined by the CNDC consist mainly of selling Fox Sports channels along with all the rights corresponding to the content that was transmitted at the time this deal was agreed. This implies that all broadcasting rights pertaining to respective competitions will have to be transferred to Mediapro as well.

The competitions included are Copa Libertadores, Argentina’s Primera División top-flight soccer league, NFL, UEFA Champions League, MLB, Formula 1, WWE, World Rugby Sevens and ATP World Tour 250 tennis.

In view of CNDC requirements, Disney had to broadcast two league matches per week on Free to Air (FTA) Television, with at least one featuring domestic heavyweights Boca Juniors or River Plate. This requirement will be scrapped once Mediapro takes over.

Copa America set to mark the start of Fox Sports’ six-year Conmebol rights deal

With Copa America just around the corner, Fox Sports has secured rights in the United States to a number of national team soccer tournaments featuring South American countries. This partnership is set to last thanks to a new six-year broadcast contract between Fox Sport and Conmebol.

More coverage for Fox Sports

These rights will be a welcome addition to Fox Sports, which has reduced its global soccer coverage in recent years since losing the Uefa Champions League and Europa League to Turner Sports. The network has also lost Bundesliga to ESPN. Not only that but the English FA Cup and the Scottish Premier League will both be shown live on ESPN+. The English-language rights to the much-anticipated rescheduled Copa America, which will take place in Argentina and Columbia from June 12th to July 12th, will be the first milestone in this partnership.

What can fans expect?

The collaboration between Fox Sports and the South American soccer governing body has a number of advantages. Over 1,500 hours of amazing national team soccer coverage will be available on the network. They also have the rights to three editions of the Women’s Copa America, and the men’s Copa America in 2024. This new deal does not stop there; Fox Sports fans will have access to both the men’s and women’s qualifiers for the Fifa World Cup as well as the long-awaited Olympic Games. As if that wasn’t enough, the deal also Conmebol beach soccer futsal as well as youth team qualifiers.

Unfortunately for soccer fans, there is a set of rights that are out of Fox Sports’ reach. Fox Sport was unable to gain the rights to Conmbeol qualifiers for the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar which was recently won by streaming service FuboTV.

According to Conmebol president Alejandro Dominguez, Fox Sports has a reputation for organizing and sponsoring top-tier football tournaments. The visibility of these soccer matches in the United States has boosted thanks to this sports channel. This collaboration allows them to build excitement among their fans for Conmebol’s Copa America in 2021, just as they did for the men’s and women’s World Cups.

The Copa America is now part of Fox Sports’ already extensive international soccer tournament schedule. Fox Sports also has the men’s and women’s Fifa World Cups, as well as the Concacaf Gold Cup.
