Ligue 1: how the LFP turns the world’s biggest tournaments into its own stage

Every few years, global football stops for a major tournament. Club competitions go quiet, and national teams take the spotlight. For most leagues, that is a period to wait out. For the Ligue 1, it is one of the best opportunities of the year.

The reason is simple: Ligue 1 players are everywhere. At AFCON or the World Cup, dozens of current and former Ligue 1 players represent their countries. Every goal, save or trophy lift is a chance to remind millions of fans where these players built their careers.

AFCON 2025: talking to Africa, in its own voice

Africa is one of the Ligue 1’s key growth markets, and one where visibility is a real challenge. For AFCON in Morocco, we proposed a creator-led activation rather than a classic brand campaign.

We partnered with Senegalese content creator Cheikh Footstyle to produce L1GHT UP AFRICA, a four-episode series covering the tournament with a special focus on Ligue 1 players. The series generated 2.9M video views and more than 379K likes.

The campaign builds on our year-round work in the region. Our geofenced Facebook strategy for Africa, with posts localized in multiple dialects and supported by paid media, drove 2.5M new followers in 2025–26: 66% of the league’s yearly recruitment.

FIFA World Cup 2026: the Ligue 1 in every conversation

For the 2026 World Cup in North America, we supported the Ligue 1 with visual and video content spotlighting current and former Ligue 1 players across X, Meta, Threads, YouTube and TikTok. Over the tournament, the results were:

  • 2,200 posts published
  • 569M impressions across all platforms
  • 180M video views, including 145M on TikTok
  • 32.7M engagements
  • 2.3M new followers

We also invited artists to reinterpret the tournament. An anime-inspired AI collaboration with Azuran and a bespoke artwork by Mats Drawing celebrating the Ligue 1’s World Champion took the league beyond the pitch. Five videos generated 9.7M views and more than 351K engagements.

A playbook that started in Buenos Aires

This approach is not new. The day after the 2022 World Cup final, Samba Digital launched a billboard campaign across Buenos Aires to celebrate Argentina’s victory and nod to Lionel Messi’s place in Ligue 1. Nine billboards over 14 days reached more than 12M people and generated 22M impacts, including the crowds gathered at the Obelisco.

The lesson for leagues

A major tournament is not a break in the calendar. It is the moment when the most people are watching football at the same time. Leagues that show up with localized, creator-led and reactive content can own a piece of that attention, even without a single club match on the schedule.
