Africa: how European clubs and leagues build real bonds with African fans

Africa is home to some of the most passionate football fans in the world. Many of them follow European clubs every weekend, often because a player from their country wears the shirt. Yet for years, most clubs spoke to these fans the same way they spoke to everyone else: in English or French, with little local flavor.

That is changing. The clubs and leagues that grow fastest in Africa treat it not as one market, but as dozens of communities, each with its own language, heroes and culture.

Speak their language, literally

The first rule is language. For AS Monaco, which we have supported in Sub-Saharan Africa for more than three years, a team of dedicated community managers communicates in multiple local languages and dialects. Around 40 geo-targeted Facebook posts a month, from Reels to carousels, delivered +664K new followers in 2025–26: half of the club’s total Facebook recruitment.

In North Africa, a separate two-person team adapts AS Monaco’s content for Algeria and Morocco and creates dedicated visuals for major cultural and religious events. Result: +258K new followers, 20% of the club’s Facebook recruitment.

Follow the players fans love

The Ligue 1 has a unique advantage: many current and former African internationals play or played in France. Our geo-targeted Facebook strategy covers every update around these athletes, in multiple dialects, around 150 posts a month. Supported by paid media, it recruited 2.5M new followers in 2025–26, or 66% of the league’s yearly recruitment.

The Bundesliga took a similar path with English-speaking African markets: 379 targeted Facebook posts in 2025–26 generated 259M impressions and 58M video views.

Let African creators tell the story

During AFCON in Morocco, we partnered with Senegalese creator Cheikh Footstyle on L1GHT UP AFRICA, a four-episode series focused on Ligue 1 players at the tournament. It generated 2.9M views and more than 379K likes. On TikTok, Olympique de Marseille uses Maghreb trends and audio, backed by paid media, and gained 63K followers in the region between July 2025 and February 2026.

Show up on the ground

Digital works best when it connects to real life. In October 2025, for the second edition of the Ligue 1 McDonald’s Trophée des Académies in Benin, Samba Digital provided 360° support: social media, graphic design, influencer management and press relations. We published 486 posts, including more than 300 geo-restricted to the region, and the event was covered by 109 media outlets across the continent.

The African playbook

  • Local languages and dialects, handled by native community managers.
  • African players at the center of the editorial line.
  • Local creators as the most credible voices.
  • Real-life events that turn followers into fans.

Africa is not a future market. It is already one of football’s biggest audiences. The question is who speaks to it best.
