Geo-fencing: the smartest way to reach international fans

Geo-fencing: the smartest way to reach international fans

A club’s global account speaks to everyone. That’s its strength and its weakness. A post celebrating a Brazilian winger’s goal may excite millions in São Paulo and leave fans in Manchester or Jakarta cold. Post too much for one market and you lose the others.

Geo-fencing solves that tension. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok let you publish content that only appears to users in selected countries. The result: one official account that can speak dozens of local languages at once.

Why geo-fencing works

  • Relevance. Fans see their players, their language, their humor and their cultural moments.
  • No cannibalization. Local content doesn’t dilute the global feed or its engagement rate.
  • Scale. Growth happens on the club’s main account, where followers matter most for partners and broadcasters.

The results, market by market

Samba Digital runs geo-fenced content for clubs and leagues across every major growth region. Here is what it delivered in 2025–26:

Client Market & platform Result
Ligue 1 Africa, Facebook +2.5M followers, 66% of yearly recruitment
Ligue 1 Global & geo-fenced, TikTok +5.2M followers, 578M video views
AS Monaco Sub-Saharan Africa, Facebook +664K followers, 50% of Facebook recruitment
AS Monaco Algeria & Morocco, Facebook +258K followers, 20% of Facebook recruitment
Chelsea FC Brazil, Instagram +538K followers, 227M impressions
Olympique Lyonnais Brazil, Instagram +362K Brazilian followers, 71M impressions
Ligue 1 Indonesia, Facebook +417K followers
Olympique de Marseille Multi-region, Instagram +300K followers, 87M impressions

National teams too

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) worked with an agency for the first time to accelerate its international growth. Using geo-targeted English-language content on Instagram and TikTok, Brazil became the number one national team worldwide for Instagram follower recruitment during the tournament, with more than 5.2M new followers. Over 4.3M of the fans recruited through our content came from outside Brazil.

What makes geo-fenced content work

Geo-fencing is a distribution tool, not a strategy on its own. The content still has to earn its place. Our teams rely on three rules:

  1. Native community managers. Our AS Monaco Africa team works in multiple local languages and dialects.
  2. Local heroes first. Current and former players from the market are the strongest hooks, from Chelsea legends like Thiago Silva in Brazil to Ligue 1’s African internationals.
  3. Cultural calendar. Religious holidays, national celebrations and local football moments drive the editorial plan.

For clubs chasing international growth, geo-fencing turns one global voice into many local conversations.
