The Turkish champions had 57 million interactions through the first half of the year, 13% more than Manchester United, who ranked second on the platform.

We are more than used to seeing Real Madrid, Barcelona or an English club having the most interactions on Twitter, but the first half of 2023 brought us a surprise: Galatasaray. With just over 57 million interactions, the Turkish club ranks first in interactions over the first six months of the year, ahead of the usual English and Spanish giants.

With content in Turkish, the page performed 13% better than the official Manchester United account – which accumulated 49.6 million interactions in the period between January 1st and July 2nd, the dates which comprise the first half of 2023.

With renowned players such as Argentine striker Mauro Icardi, Uruguayans Fernando Muslera and Lucas Torreira, Belgian Dries Mertens and Italian midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, Galatasaray took the lead using their native language. In other words: speaking directly to their fanatical audience.

And anyone who thinks that the team needed to dare to achieve this feat is wrong: after winning the 2022/2023 Süper Lig, the club posted a simple but impressive design: “the good ones will definitely win in the end…”

The Turkish club’s main post in the first half of the year reached around 16 million people, with more than 300,000 interactions on Twitter alone. Rivalry – a very present element in Turkish culture – could be noticed in the post with the second-best performance, which was a reply to a rival. Overall, it gathered just over 200,000 interactions, reaching 6 million people.

For Wagner Leitzke, Social Media Manager at Samba Digital, Galatasaray’s performance is not surprising.

“Turkish supporters are recognized for their fanaticism and also for their digital engagement. This opens up space for the development and application of high-quality organic creation and sharing skills. That passion alone would be enough to turn into a huge foundation. Well crafted, it generates constant interaction and culminates in expressive results, marked by authentic content and consistent performance in dissemination”.

Performance analysis over the beginning of 2023

The performance of Galatasaray’s interactions throughout the first half of 2023 did not change significantly. The monthly analysis reveals that the interactions between January and May have similar performances, which shows a linearity in the content format:

According to Data Report, developed by We Are Social and Meltwater, it is estimated that 71.38 million people use the internet in Turkey and that, of these, 18.55 million use Twitter – that is, 21.7% of the Turkish population. According to this analysis, Twitter use grew by 15.2% from the beginning of 2022 to the beginning of 2023.
