Populous stadium design is chosen by Inter and AC Milan to replace San Siro
AC Milan and Inter Milan have selected a design by stadium architects Populous for their new home stadium. This new Cathedral stadium will accommodate both Milan clubs, replacing the famous San Siro, where the two Serie A teams have played since 1926.
The Cathedral stadium
This Cathedral, which will be built near the current San Siro site, will be part of a larger sport and entertainment zone that will include a 50,000-square-meter green space. The majority of sport and leisure activities offered to guests will be free or associated with the City of Milan. This pedestrian-only sector will include about 110,000 square metres of green space in total. As a result, it will account for 40% of the site’s total square footage, with an underground parking garage accounting for the remaining 27%.
The Cathedral will be carbon neutral and LEED certified, according to Populous, which opened a Milan office in September. In addition, it has promised an excellent user experience and stadium accessibility, as well as the creation of new job opportunities as part of the project.
Populous has been chosen today by @acmilan and @Inter as the architect for the new #Milano Stadium.

Our design, known as "The Cathedral", will create a world-class, sustainable home for the clubs and form the beating heart of a new civic district.

This is not all that this new stadium has to offer, since it was inspired by the Duomo di Milano and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, two of Milan’s most well-known buildings. Populous’ Milan office will design it, with assistance from the EMEA unit in London. The next round of the process will take place over the following few months, with the goal of delivering a final project in 2022.
More about Populous
Populous, a global architecture firm, has created various sports stadiums, including the newly built Yankee Stadium in New York and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Of course, the list goes on including Premier League grounds such as Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and West Ham United’s London Stadium, which served as the principal venue for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Furthermore, the Populous-designed Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, home of the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, is set to become the world’s first net zero arena.
The Cathedral is on track to become one of the world’s most recognisable stadiums. It will be a modern home for iconic clubs AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano, as well as the focal point of a new neighbourhood. These two Milan clubs have been campaigning for a new stadium for long years. However, it wasn’t until November that the Milan Council approved the construction of a stadium to replace the San Siro.
