LaLiga continues to make history on Twitch with Basque derby live stream

In October 2020, LaLiga became the first European sports league to join Twitch and has no intention of stopping there. This season, LaLiga has started streaming live games on Twitch in the hopes of attracting a younger audience and increasing engagement. LaLiga is the first major European football league in Spain to broadcast a live match on Twitch. They are still making history as Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao played in the first live match on April 7, 2021.

The league’s recent move to this streaming platform has aided in the maintenance of a positive relationship with long-time fans. However, this intrigue isn’t limited to long-time fans; it’s also sparking the interest of a new generation of fans. LaLiga saw Twitch as a way to connect with Generation Z, one of the most difficult generations to fully engage. LaLiga chose Twitch as the best platform for the job since the bulk of Twitch’s audience is between the ages of 18 and 34, with a significant audience between the ages of 13 and 17.

The addition of renowned Spanish online streamer Ibai Llanos and presenter Ander Cortes to commentate on the match made last week’s live stream even more unforgettable. Users could connect with the presenters and other viewers through Twitch’s chatbox, making the experience more interactive. Not only can these streamers interact with viewers, but Twitch and LaLiga can now be a part of a new generation of commentary that encourages their younger viewers to engage.

On Wednesday night in Spain, the Basque derby was exclusively streamed on Twitch, complete with pre-game build-up. Despite its desire to appeal to a younger audience, LaLiga remains accessible to all of its fans. To ensure that all fans could watch, it was also broadcast on conventional channels such as Gol, Movistar, Vodafone, Orange, and Telecable.

More and more join

More clubs are following LaLiga’s lead and moving to Twitch to expand their reach. We saw a significant increase after Twitch relaunched the TwitchSports channel. Arsenal, Real Madrid, Juventus, and PSG are only a handful of the well-known clubs that have joined the streaming network. Twitch has also signed major deals with La Liga’s Real Madrid and the English Premier League’s Arsenal. Both teams are releasing Twitch channels in an effort to reach out to Twitch’s massive audience.
