Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland have teamed together to bid for EHF Euro 2028

The Spanish, Portuguese, and Swiss Handball Federations have joined forces for exciting things to come, with the EHF Euro 2028 preparation well underway. By joining forces, these three will be able to submit a joint bid to host the Men’s EHF Euro 2028. The whole bidding scenario for the EHF Euro tournaments in 2026 and 2028 has altered dramatically as a result of this exciting move.

It all started with a combined bid by Spain and Portugal for the 2028 men’s tournament. Whilst Spain and Portugal combined Switzerland bid for both the Men’s EHF Euro 2026 and Men’s EHF Euro 2028 tournaments. The three nations saw it as a way to demonstrate their commitment to making EHF Euro 2028 a memorable event. They proposed the renowned Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home of Real Madrid football club, as a possible site to display the final weekend with this goal in mind. The Palau St.Jordi in Barcelona, the Wanda Stadium in Madrid, and the Palexpo in Geneva are some of the other final weekend locations that have also been in the running.

EHF Extraordinary Congress

Fans will have to wait a bit longer for the host nations to be revealed. Decisions on the EHF Euro championships in 2026 and 2028 will be made on November 20th, during the EHF Extraordinary Congress in Vienna. Switzerland abandoned its standalone bids when the amended “three-nation offer” was approved.

This news comes on the heels of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden withdrawing from their bid to host the Women’s EHF Euro 2026. Denmark, Sweden, and Norway also withdraw from hosting the Men’s EHF Euro 2028.

The following is a list of the federations that have applied to host the EHF Euro’s in 2026 and 2028:

  • Men’s EHF EURO 2026 (15 January to 1 February): DEN/SWE/NOR
  • Women’s EHF EURO 2026 (3 to 20 December): RUS
  • Men’s EHF EURO 2028 (13 to 30 January): ESP/POR/SUI
  • Women’s EHF EURO 2028 (30 November to 17 December): NOR/DEN/SWE

More possible venues for 2026

Denmark, Sweden, and Norway have submitted some venues for events in 2026 that are a little closer in our calendars. These include Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning and Ceres Arena in Aarhus. Not only that but Arena Kristianstad, Malmö Arena, DNB Arena in Stavanger, Trondheim Spektrum, Byarena in Bergen and even Nye Fornebu in Oslo are in the running.

This is not all, Russia has proposed some sites for the Women’s EHF Euro 2026. These include Yubileyny Sports Place and Sibur Arena in St. Petersburg, as well as VTB Arena in Moscow, which will also host the final weekend. It is also rumored that The WiZink Center in Madrid and the Altice Arena in Lisbon, the Palau St. Jordi in Barcelona could host Europe’s best players in 2028. This is not all for European venues as the Casal Espania Arena in Valencia, the Hallenstadion, the Swisslife Arena in Zürich, the Vaudoise Arena in Lausanne, and the St. Jakobshalle in Basel could also host Europe’s best players in 2028.

The Palau St.Jordi and the Wanda Stadium or the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, are all possible locations for the final weekend. Palexpo in Geneva may be a fourth possibility. Denmark and Norway have proposed the same prospective locations for the Women’s EHF Euro 2028. Sweden replaces the arenas in Kristianstad and Malmö with the Arena Helsingborg and the Scandinavium in Gothenburg. The last weekend could be in the Nye Fornebu in Oslo. Fans of the EHF still have to wait for the ultimate decision, which will be from the EHF and the organizing committees.
